Hawker centers are an integral part of Singaporean culture, offering affordable communal dining and a wide range of cuisines. These large, often open-air complexes house numerous stalls serving local and international dishes.
There are 123 markets and hawker centers in Singapore, ranked the world's second richest country by GDP per capita in 2025 after Switzerland by the Economist.
Some tourists said eating at Singapore hawker centers is exceptionally safe thanks to strict government regulations, regular inspections, and mandatory hygiene ratings.
Singapore ranked fourth in Asia on TasteAtlas's list of 100 best food cities in the world in 2025/26.
